5 Days and Counting ….

I leave for Stampin’ Up!’s Convention in just 5 days. This will be my 9th year going and it’s just so much fun in addition to learning so many new things. This is their 25th anniversary so it’s going to be a great one. There was a recent announcement that there are 5,800 demonstrators registered to go.

Convention

I have been working on swaps off and on for the last few weeks and am just about finished. No one has to take cards to swap but it’s not only fun,  you come home with so many new card ideas. And there is no set number of swaps to take. You just bring home as many new cards as the number of swaps you take. There are organized swaps and general swapping. Organized swaps are just that – organized by an individual for a specific type of card. There are Christmas swaps, Halloween swaps, Masculine card swaps, Vintage swaps, Wow card swaps, full card swaps, and the list goes on and on. So I signed up for a Wow swap that has to be a full card. A Wow card is one that would pretty much make someone say “Wow, that’s a great card”. It has to have layering and embellishments on it. Most organized swaps have a specific number of people who can sign up so that determines how many cards you need to make. My organized swap is for 75 cards. I also like to take other cards for general swapping. These are usually just a card front. It saves paper and takes less time to make. That is just done with anyone you see who is swapping and believe me there are demonstrators all over doing this. So this is what I have: Swaps

103 full cards and 32 card fronts

I do have a few days before I leave so I just might make a few more to take. If I get them started I can finish them on the plane. I have done this several years and it’s a great way to pass the time on that long flight out to Salt Lake City.

Swallowtail

I love butterflies and Stampin’ Up! certainly has some beautiful butterfly stamps. This large stamp came out in a previous mini catalog but I didn’t get it until just recently. I had fun making this card and know you will be seeing much more of it from me in the future. For this card I heat embossed the butterfly and the sentiment with Pool Party embossing powder. The butterfly stamp is actually quite large but I like the look of using just a portion of it and I purposely stamped it a bit off center and tilted. Add a little bling and you have a quick, easy card.

I mentioned I got a bit of a sunburn yesterday …. that is an understatement. I am cooked! Bright lobster red. I look like a tourist ’cause they tend to not realize how easily you can burn at the beach. I’ve lived here over 40 years.  Should have known better. Just saying.

A Day at the Beach

I use to go to the beach often but these last two years I had not gone much and I should, especially since it is so close.  Today a friend and I went and had a great time with the boogie boards. It’s so much fun when you catch the right wave and can ride it towards the shore. It’s like floating on glass. We took snacks and bottles of water. I freeze the water and then put the bottles down inside a large neck thermos cooler. It melts slowly so we had cold water all day long. One of the cruise ships was coming into port right next to where we were and it’s always fun to see them going past and see people on deck waving as they go by. We also saw a bit of a crowd gathering a ways down the beach and realized there was something that had washed up so we walked down to investigate. It was a huge sea turtle belly up. That thing was enormous … about 3 feet long.  It was kind of sad and I wondered what would happen to it. I suppose it would eventually wash back out to sea. Even though we had a big beach umbrella which kept us in the shade when we were sitting on the beach I managed to get enough sun while I was in the water to feel the sting tonight.  All in all it was a perfect day.

10 Minute Wow

bee

This card was Cased from one my up-line, Catherine Harwood, had done showing how you can use an embossing folder like a stamp. I changed a few things and added the bee to my card. The background is done by inking up the inside of the Hexagon embossing folder with a brayer. You only need to ink the front panel of the embossing folder. Once you have the inside inked insert the piece of card stock and just press on the folder with your fingers. Do not run it through the Big Shot. You only want the lined image of the hexagons, not the embossed image. It doesn’t matter if the image is not inked evenly on your card stock, in fact it adds to the card if it is not. I used So Saffron ink on So Saffron paper. After this step I sponged some of the ink over portions of the card stock. Punch out a few pieces of Designer Series Paper with the Hexagon punch, add a vintage button, ribbon, a greeting and the bee and you have a finished card, quick and easy.

Stamps: Itty Bitty Banners, Postage Collection (Hostess Set)

Ink: So Saffron, Chocolate Chip

Paper: So Saffron, Vanilla, Afternoon Picnic Designer Series Paper

Misc: Hexagon Embossing Folder, Hexagon Punch, Very Vintage Designer Buttons, Pear Pizzaz Taffeta Ribbon, Mini Glue Dots, Stamping Sponge

A friend and my daughter both told me how good Breaking Bad, the TV series, is so I have been watching back to back episodes this weekend starting with the first season. I’m not sure how many seasons or episodes there are but I got hooked on it like an addict gets hooked on meth ….   Oh wow, I just did a Google search and found out there are 6 seasons so I have 4 more to go. The series has won 7 Emmys and the final season will premiere next month.  So the show is all about a high school chemistry teacher who learns he has lung cancer and winds up producing and selling meth so he can provide for his families financial future before he dies. Great acting, some violence.

Have a Blessed Sunday,

Secret Garden Background

This weeks cards had a bit of a theme ….creating backgrounds. I didn’t start out to do that but the three cards I decided to do all happened to have a different interesting background. This card’s background is simply stamped but it does wind up looking like a beautiful Designer Series Paper.

SG Butterfly

I did two different versions of the stamped background. This one is stamped only. The one below was stamped and then run through the Big Shot using the Square Lattice embossing folder.

b fly

This is the inside of the card. I left it with no greeting so I can add an appropriate greeting as I need a card. I like doing that with at least some of my cards.

Stamps: Secret Garden, Four Frames, Papillon Potpourri

Ink: Primrose Petals, Gumball Green, Early Espresso

Paper: Primrose Petals, White, Early Espresso

Misc: Decorative Label Punch, Dimensionals, Pearls, Stitched Satin Ribbon

Each package of pearls has a few short rows of small pearls that are all connected. These are the ones to use when adding them to the butterfly. Just cut through the string where you can get three of them. They all come off the paper together and are so much easier to work with.

I decided to stay home and not go see the fireworks but there was someone in the neighborhood that was setting them off and I could see them right outside my back sliding glass doors. They were the good ones too that explode into all different cascading colors. It felt like my own private show. Hoping you had a good holiday.

Happy 4th with Uncle Sam

I did not make a card this year for the 4th so I decided to pull out one of my favorite convention swaps from a few years ago. It is the cutest punch art Uncle Sam and created by demonstrator Eva Davalos from Albuquerque. It’s always fun to swap cards at convention because you get so many creative ideas.

July 4

You’ll have a spectacular 4th of July holiday and thanks for stopping by,

Just a quick post

Look what I found on my walk this morning. It was in someone’s front yard and peeking at me from under the bushes. As I walked by it slowly came out and then just stopped and stared at me. After a minute or so it ran across the street towards a vacant area with a lot of trees. I have always known there are racoons in the area. I have seen them before at night but only on the golf course, never in someone’s yard and especially in the daylight.
