Halloween Extras

In the past few days I posted a Halloween card and also information about the new Envelope Punch Board. So in a recent class we made the Halloween card and an envelope to go with it. (I used some retired paper for the envelope). After cutting the required amount for the envelope I had leftover strips of paper. I also had some leftover candy from the candy corn muslin bag I showed you a few days ago. I love candy corn so I didn't want it around the house so we made a Halloween treat with candy corn using the leftover paper from the envelope. These are called sour cream containers because, well, because that's what they look like.

envelope etc

Sour Cream Container Directions:

  • Start with a piece of DSP 5-1/2" x 4-1/4".  (we used a slightly smaller piece – 5-1/4" x 4" – because that is what was left from the envelope). Lay it on the table with the long sides on the top and bottom.
  • Attach Sticky Strip to the areas indicated in the photo below.

sc tape

  • Roll the paper into a tube starting on the short side.  Attach to the opposite end with the Sticky Strip. You now have a tube with both ends open.
  • Seal one end by pinching the ends together and securing with the Sticky Strip.
  • Fill with candy or other small gift.
  • Pinch the other open end together in the opposite direction and seal with the Sticky Strip.
  • Add a tag.

My daughter and grandson stopped by this afternoon. She brought me some yummy soup. Thanks for that, Lynn Ann.  It seemed as though my grandson had gotten taller since I saw him about a week ago so I measured him. He's a whopping 6 feet tall. Nothing he got from his mother.  She'll tell you she's 4' 11-1/2" but I think she's really 4' 11".

So today is Friday the 13th. Are you superstitious?  I was reading about it on the internet and found that about 10% of people believe it is an unlucky day. I am not one of them, however, I wouldn't plan a big event on Friday 13th. Sure wouldn't recommend getting married on this date. Wouldn't schedule surgery on this date. And I wouldn't tempt fate by breaking a mirror or opening an umbrella inside the house. But if you are one of those who worry about bad luck following you around have I got good news for you. I read you will have good luck if a bird poops on your head. So go outside and stand under a bunch of trees and just maybe you'll get lucky.

Candy Corn Bag

Candy bag

I saw this candy corn bag on Connie Collins' blog and thought it was so cute I just had to make some. Connie is a very talented stamper and a member of the Stampin' Up! 2013 Artisan Design Team. The muslin bags in the Holiday Catalog are the perfect size for wrapping up a treat and nothing says Halloween like candy corn. There are 8 bags for just $9.95. I can think of so many uses for them.

  • Insert a piece of cardboard inside the bag to make it sturdy for inking. The white sheets that come in a package of DSP are perfect for this.
  • Wrap a strip of painters' tape around the bag to mask off the center of the bag.
  • Sponge Pumpkin Pie ink on the bottom in a downward motion.
  • Move the painters' tape down to cover the top of the Pumpkin Pie ink. Add another strip of tape to mask the top of the bag leaving the center area open. Sponge this with Daffodil Delight ink. Remove the tape.
  • Cut a triangle of Vanilla cardstock and stamp the sentiment and candy. Mat with a piece of Pumpkin Pie cardstock. Color candy with markers. Punch a hole in the top and thread through the cording. I had to untie the end of the cord and then retied it after attaching the tag.
  • Fill a cello bag with candy corn and insert into bag.
  • Give to your favorite goblin.

Shelli Gardner, CEO and Cofounder of Stampin' Up!, was involved in a horseback riding accident August 28th when her horse stumbled. She was thrown off and the horse fell on top of her. Her wrist had 3 fractures, 4 in her pelvis, and her clavicle was fractured. She underwent surgery on her wrist and is now going through physical therapy while still in the hospital. Her husband wrote some blog posts about the accident and included several photos of Shelli and of her horse. Yesterday Shelli wrote a blog post. You can see her blog here. She has an amazing spirit and strong determination which is evident in the posts. Praying for her speedy recovery.

Halloween Hello

Halloween

And the inside of the card:

For this card I used the Halloween Hello stamp set that is in the Holiday Catalog and paper from Witches' Brew DSP. The piece of paper with the birds is from Modern Medley DSP. My color palette is pulled directly from the colors in the DSP. I sponged ink around the edge of the large Summer Starfruit circle and offset the witch and attached it with dimensionals to make it appear as though she is flying in front of the moon.

Stamps: Halloween Hello

Ink: Black, Pumpkin Pie

Paper: Black, Vanilla, Summer Starfruit, Witches' Brew DSP, Modern Medley DSP

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays, ever since I was a little girl. I had the best costumes made by my mother and often with help from my father. Nothing store-bought. In elementary school we got to wear them and we paraded through the other classrooms. Halloween night we went door to door throughout the neighborhood getting the best treats, back when Trick or Treating was safe and so was the candy. Caramel apples, popcorn balls, and all kinds of candy. There was one house that gave out shiny new pennies. And another house that always gave out wax whistles. Those were always two things we looked forward to. This is one of my very favorite costumes, Martha Washington. Thanks, Mom, for making so many great costumes.

I got home late Thursday night from my trip to KY to visit my mother, my son and his family. My mother moved to Lexington last month and into the most wonderful independent living facility. She still had boxes to unpack and pictures to hang so we did that and just had a great time being together. The wall collage in the photo below is all pictures of her parents and of her. The picture on the right below is of her when she was just a very little girl and you can see her doll sitting on a chair. There is some glare from the glass that is over the photo but you can still tell. It's the same chair that we hung on the wall. That chair is about 88 years old.

It was great having extra time with the grandkids due to the Labor Day holiday. We all went bowling, something I have not done in a very long time. I was never very good and that's still the case. I got to go to one of Anderson's baseball games. I didn't get any pictures at the game but here's one I did take of him. Typical 6 year old boy!

Happy Fall Y’all

I am in Kentucky this week visiting my son and his family and my mother. I was hoping for a little cooler weather however I guess it's a bit too early for fall weather. It's been in the 90's so it's not much different than our Floida temps. But it's not too early to start thinking of fall cards and the Stampin' Up! Holiday catalog has some great products for all of your paper crafting.

This card uses the popular starburst technique (also called sunburst). To make the background starburst:

  • Vanilla cardstock 3-1/2" x 3-3/4".
  • Designer Series Paper and Glimmer Paper 4" x 1-1/2". Cut these pieces in half on the diagonal. You will need a total of 6 pieces.

See video below for complete instructions.

Stamps: Magnificent Maple, Teeny Tiny Wishes

Ink: Chocolate Chip

Paper: Tangerine Tango, Crushed Curry, Vanilla, Sweater Weather DSP, Glimmer Paper

Misc: Word Window Punch, Modern Label Punch, Scallop Border Punch, Glimmer Brad, Dimensionals

Flip Card

I recently bought the new Thinlit Dies for making flip cards and this is my first card which we did in last week's class. If you ever tried making one without the die you probably wanted to pull your hair out. It was a lot of work and measuring. The new Stampin' Up! Thinlit dies make it super easy! This is the card from the front.

And this is the card when it's flipped open. Now if someone invited me over for coffee I would have the perfect thank you.

Stamps: Kind & Cozy
